We all know how hot the Middle East gets in summer – but we certainly don’t expect Europe to compete with such high temperatures!

This summer, there’s been a serious heatwave across northern Europe. The UK has hit record highs for the hottest days ever recorded, with temperatures reaching above 40℃ (104℉) for the first time ever!

So if you’ve got a trip planned to the UK, France, Spain or Germany, you may be looking for some extra cool activities for you and your family.

Here are 5 chilled out ways to have fun on your trip:

Outdoor swimming

Outdoor swimming is perfect for cooling off on a hot day, meanwhile helping you to dive right into that holiday vibe! Whether it’s at a lake or an outdoor pool, an afternoon spent by the water will keep everyone entertained, relaxed, and most importantly, nice and cool!

If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out the various spots to swim outdoors in London here.

Take a drive in the countryside

How does hiring a car and taking it for a spin through lush green countryside to visit the beach sound? Getting out of the city on a road trip is an easy way to surround yourself with fresh air and escape the heat of the city concrete. You’ll also get to see more of the country’s landscape and find hidden gems off the regular tourist trail.

Visiting museums

On a hot day, one place where you can find some shade and cool air whilst still having a great time is at a museum. Mainly built in big, stone buildings, museums across Europe are a perfect sanctuary if the heatwave is getting a little too much. Plus, with some of the world’s most impressive art, history and science on display, a museum visit is a fun-filled activity for the whole family.

Check out the different museums in Paris, Barcelona and London.

Going on a boat trip

There’s nothing like a boat trip on a river, lake or ocean to keep you cool on a hot day. With the wind whipping by and a cool, shady boat, a day trip out on the water is a great day out – and a unique way to explore lots of exciting locations around Europe.

Take a look at canal trips in Amsterdam and boat tours in the French Riviera for some inspiration.

Eating lots of ice cream

And finally, one of the easiest ways to keep cool on a hot day is enjoying the best ice cream that Europe has to offer – which is a very enjoyable experience!

From fancy gelato in Rome, to gourmet sorbet in Paris, to ice lollies by the seaside in Wales, make sure you stay refreshed with some cold treats this summer!
